This is a poster announcing the 40th anniversary of The Poetry Project’s New Year’s Eve Marathon Reading, an annual event held in St. Mark’s Church in New York’s East Village and featuring upwards of eighty speakers.
Taking inspiration from the idea that the meaning of poetry itself is not always manifested explicitly in its outward-facing language, the text of the poster is intentionally not immediately readable at a quick glance. The eighty-plus names and other information, set in the condensed type superfamily Rama Gothic, initially appear as a fine texture that varies in intensity. The viewer must look a bit closer and read in to see the actual meaning.
