The Central Coast Railway Club and the Pacific Locomotive Association jointly held the San Diego Steam Special II excursion train trip on the first weekend of May 2010. The star of the show was 3751, an impeccably restored former Santa Fe 4-8-4 steam locomotive, which pulled a train of anachronistic Amtrak Amfleet and Horizon cars and a number of historic, privately-owned dome and baggage coaches as well. Amtrak's P42 diesel locomotive #13 was part of the consist as well, in order to provide electric power to some of the coaches, and to serve as a backup should 3751 fail. The San Diego Steam Special left Los Angeles Union Station on the morning of Saturday, May 1, and arrived at San Diego's Santa Fe Depot in the mid-afternoon. On Sunday, May 2, the train left San Diego in the late morning and arrived in Los Angeles in the late afternoon. The photos below were taken at Los Angeles Union Station on Saturday and at Fullerton station (where the train made a brief five-minute stop) on Sunday. |
