Green Bus Lines (GBL) was a company operating local and express bus service in the New York City boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Founded in 1925, GBL originally operated a number of local bus routes in Manhattan, but the franchises for these routes were transferred to other companies in the 1930s. GBL refocused its operations on southeastern Queens, where it continued to operate until 2006. Over the years, GBL operated a wide variety of buses on a number of local and express routes, and GBL's stockholders acquired three other New York private bus companies -- Command Bus, Jamaica Buses, and Triboro Coach. However, by the 2000s, GBL's fleet was mostly composed of old buses in need of replacement. The oldest bus operated by GBL (as of January 2006) was an obsolete GMC RTS from 1984. The majority of GBL's fleet consisted of GMC and TMC RTS buses from the 1980s and 1990s, some of which had major mechanical issues. Most of GBL's fleet had already passed the 12-year federally-specified threshold at which a public transit company can apply for federal funds for new buses. GBL's newest buses by the time of the takeover were fifty-four Orion V diesel buses manufactured in 1997 and 1999. In early 2006, GBL was absorbed by the MTA Bus Company as a part of that agency's takeover of the seven New York City private bus companies. Initially, GBL's fleet still operated with MTA logos in place of the GBL logos, but most of GBL's bus fleet was phased out in favor of newer buses. As of 2009, the only ex-GBL buses still in operation at MTA Bus are the Orion Vs from 1997 and 1999, all repainted in MTA colors. The following photos are from a visit to the two GBL bus garages on January 6, 2006, the day before the MTA Bus takeover. Sights of note below include MCI Classics and TMC RTSs transferred from MTA Bus for post-takeover use, GBL buses in GBL livery with MTA logos, and a number of abandoned GBL and Command/Varsity buses at GBL's Arverne garage. |
